David Kramer's Top Ten List that ended up being 12!Bo-Kaap Wait for the Nagtroepe in Wale street. Try and be there around midnight on New Year's eve when the musicians march up from town. Thousands throng the area. There is nowhere else like it. Anytime during the rest of the year, stroll along Chiappini Street and buy samoosas at the corner cafe. Long Street If you want to listen to and buy music from this continent, then The African Music Store at 134 Long Street is the best place in town. Independent Book Stores Clarke's at 211 Long Street for new and second hand books on South Africa, the Book Lounge at 71 Roeland Street, Kalk Bay Books in Main Road, Kalk Bay and the Bay Bookshop in the Mainstream Centre, Hout Bay for the best book-shopping in the city. Labia Cinema Not far from the Mount Nelson Hotel is the Labia cinema complex. Years ago it was a theatre and it retains some of the decorative features from that era. It's my favourite place for watching movies as it brings back memories of the bioscopes of my childhood. District Six Museum The story of District Six and its destruction under the apartheid regime looms large in this city. Much of Cape Town's culture was forged here in the shadow of Devil's Peak. A must if you want to understand the history and dynamic of this city. Also visit the Ghoema & Glitter exhibition at the Castle of Good Hope not far away. Lion's Head If you feeling energetic and want to experience the best view of the city then walk up this mountain in the late afternoon. It's the best place to watch the sunset. Better still, go when the moon is full, watch the city lights catch fire as you come down in the dark. Go with someone who knows the way. Blouberg Get out to Blouberg before sunrise and watch Table Mountain catch the first rays of the sun. Walk along the beach and keep your eyes open for fossilized shark's teeth. They're a dark blue colour. Very rare but still to be found. Biscuit Mill Market at 373 Albert Rd Woodstock Have breakfast at this wonderful Neighbourhood Market on a Saturday morning. In the same complex experience Oded's Kitchen for interesting pickles, preserves and many other middle eastern inspired delicacies - they are open daily. Newlands Experience the vibrant atmosphere of the Newlands Rugby ground when Western Province or the Stormers are playing a home game. Right next door is Caveau, a wine bar and restaurant, which is in the old mill building on the river. Sip a glass of South African wine on the deck next to the water. Kalk Bay Harbour Go early when the fishing boats return and watch the fish being scaled as you wait. Solms Delta, Franschhoek Visit the small museum on the Solms-Delta wine estate for an insight into the history behind the beautiful vineyards and romantic Cape Dutch architecture. Learn how conditions are changing for workers due to the progressive reforms that are taking place. If you're here in April then don't miss the harvest celebration (Oesfees) on the farm. It's an open air music concert that celebrates an eclectic mix of jazz and traditional music and musicians. Food and wine are served under the oaks. Route 62 My favourite route, whether I'm driving to Plettenberg Bay or Oudtshoorn is to take Route 62. McGregor (turn off in Robertson) is a very quaint village and home to Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary where old and sometimes mistreated donkeys are cared for in their "retirement." ![]() |
