Picnic lovers can once again look forward to the popular summer full-moon picnics at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument on Paarl Mountain. These picnics are enjoyed by local as well as international visitors for the sunset and night-time views of the valley.

The first picnic of the season will take place on Saturday 27 October (sunset 19:10, moonrise 17:13). This is three days before full moon, but the moon will already be more than 96.4% full. There will be guided tours of the monument at 18:30 and 19:30. The monument will be open until 22:00.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets or they can order one from Volksmond Coffee Shop (tel. 021 863 2800 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). Volksmond will be open until 22:00 for coffee and light refreshments.

Entrance fees at the gate are R15 for adults, R10 for students and R5 for children. No booking required. Visitors are reminded to bring a torch and warm clothes. No dogs and fires are allowed. Safe parking is available and access is controlled.

A new addition to this year’s full-moon picnics is a photo competition with various prizes to be won.

Full-moon picnics are also scheduled for Friday 30 November (sunset 19:42, moonrise 21:15) and n Friday 28 December (sunset 20:00, moonrise 19:57).
