If you care about your town or region and how it rates in the tourism stakes, become a consumer activist and make sure your tourism office, municipality, route or meander participates in the competition. All towns should enter. All towns are... or should be... competitive destinations -- as places to live, work, play, visit and invest in. Destinations with little hope of winning at this stage of their development do benefit the most -- through public participation.
One entrant captured it best: "I have read all the info and it looks achievable and - even if we don't get very far in the competition - the process will be valuable to us (the Swellendam tourism organisation) in terms of evaluation and moving forward with our marketing strategy (which is moving out of infancy into puberty at the moment)."
The competition is open to all cities, towns and villages, routes, meanders and regions anywhere in South Africa. There is also a category for destinations which are standalone brands, but they need to meet certain criteria. Sorry, a guest house is not a destination!

BLOGS Cape Town Tourism: delivery time! In spite of all the accolades, Cape Town Tourism announced during recent presentations on a new marketing plan and brand strategy that the city has lost market share of 16% in the last five years. Now market share has less to do with the recession than other destinations doing things smarter or reaping fortuitous benefits.
There's also been zero growth, with an effective loss of 18,000 jobs and 118 businesses (CTT members) have closed down.
It's against that background that we took at deeper look, with comments from others, on the challenges facing the industry and the city.

Say No! to toll roads in Cape Town
After the fiasco of new toll roads in Gauteng, Capetonians and citizens of the Western Cape should be on the alert for what could happen in their province. Toll roads are planned for the N1 and N2 between the city and the Winelands, and a Garden Route toll road is planned too. The City of Cape Town has already declared an intergovernmental dispute with SANRAL -- the National Roads Agency.
