The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre has established itself as one of the leading private research and breeding facilities for endangered species in the country. Governed by a progressive and modern management approach, it concerns itself with the breeding and maintenance of several endangered indigenous wildlife species in southern Africa. The centre places particular emphasis on the breeding and maintenance of cheetah in captivity. The excellent condition of these animals and the premises on which they are maintained, reflect the attention to detail, which is the hallmark of this facility.
The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) focuses on the conservation of rare, vulnerable or endangered animals. Cheetah Conservation is one of their core disciplines.
THE HESC IS OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK (2 HOUR TOURS)
Normal tour hours:
9 am / 11 am / 1 pm / 3 pm
During national holiday season (including public holidays and long weekends) tours will be conducted on the following times:
8 am / 10am/ 12pm/ 2pm/ 4pm
R140 per adult and R65 per child aged 6 – 11 years.
Pensioner rate (ages 65 and up) @ R110 per person.
The Centre is actively involved in:
- The breeding of endangered, vulnerable or rare animal species
- The release and establishment of captive-bred cheetahs to the wild
- The treatment and rehabilitation of orphaned or injured animals which are brought to the Centre
- The education of learners, students and the general public in conservation and conservation activities
- Eco-tourism
- A hands-on Student's Programme to conservation and adventure enthusiasts from around the world.
The HESC is a must on any visitor's itinerary. Not only does it present a fascinating insight into rare and vulnerable animal species and animal conservation efforts at large, it offers fun and interactive tours, drives, and excursions. It has a range of accommodation options for visitors looking for a longer stay - an ideal base from which to explore the area.
Following an introductory presentation on HESC, day visitors are treated to an in-depth tour of the Centre. Open safari vehicles with experienced guides depart on the hour. Moving between the various enclosures, guests can view cheetah, wild dog, lions, African wild cats, ground hornbills, Sable antelope and much more in an up close and personal manner. Prior reservations are essential.
Guests are also afforded the opportunity of watching rare African vultures feeding on carcass remains at the “Vulture Restaurant”.
