The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront company was established by the state-owned SA Transport Services in 1988. V&AW was a wholly-owned state company but, unlike most others which failed abysmally, the V&A exceeded all expectations.
Transnet sold it to foreign owners in 2006 for R7.5 billion – R2.5 billion more than it expected. The foreign owners sold it back to South African owners in 2011 for R9.7 billion. Today it is a public/private partnership owned by 120,000 South Africans. In 2019, just before Covid, the property was valued at almost R19 billion.
Apart from financial success, the V&A is widely regarded as the best waterfront in the world, and the greenest, most valuable and most popular destination on the African continent. How did the V&A become so successful? Surely there are lessons to copy?

Here's a taste of what you will find:
1898
Small wooden ships powered by sail, jam-packed into Victoria & Alfred basins, the masts like trees in a forest. This was the Gateway to Africa.
1952
Already less busy because most shipping moved to Duncan Dock. Much of the area was occupied by tank farms providing the fossil fuel required by the bigger steel ships.
Today
The tank farm is flooded and a canal winds its way back to the Convention Centre. Shops, restaurants, hotels, offices and apartments make it part of the city. The V&A re-established Cape Town's link to Table Bay.
The Watershed
South Africa's premier craft and design retail space. Over 150 stores and 365 South African brands.
Two Oceans Aquarium
The Two Oceans Aquarium is over 30 years old and continues to enthral and inform. It is a family favourite.
.
Zeitz MOCAA
The Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is the world's largest museum dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. The conversion of the old Grain Silo makes this an iconic space.
Marina Residential Estate
The most successful property development in Cape Town ever! How was this achieved? What were the challenges?
Canal District & Battery Park
The main entrance from the city centre is worth exploring. The canal is hidden from view from the road. And Battery Park is the city's newest, very popular park.
Table Mountain
The V&A's unbeatable backdrop is Table Mountain, one of the world's most iconic sites and sights.
