A picnic concert with Tribal echo and other well-known hip hop artists will be held at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl.

frikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl will soon come to life as popular band Tribal Echo and other well-known hip hop artists gather for a special outdoor performance.

Young people, as well as the young at heart, are invited to this picnic concert on Saturday 16 March, at the Taalmonument’s Garden Theatre - the baby brother of the well-known Paarl Amphitheatre. It is situated on the grass banks at the feet of the monument.

The purpose of the concert, presented in collaboration with the Taalmonument’s youth club,  the Taaljunkies (http://www.facebook.com/groups/taaljunkies), is to create a platform where youngsters can share their creative talents through Afrikaans rap, known as “rymklets”. The concert is supported by Rymklets Republiek (www.rymklets.co.za).

Tribal Echo will be performing at 20:00. Having already released two popular CD’s, guests will be treated to brand new songs which will appear on their upcoming hip hop album. The group has been together for around 10 years and has performed at various national festivals. Their music can be described as a melting pot of genres such as samba, rock’n’roll, reggae, disco, funk, and hiphop – with an authentic African spirit at its core. It is driven by strong acoustic guitar sounds, saxophone melodies, violin solos, base guitar, drums, and creative word art.

Two of the band’s members previously won the National Hip Hop Head competition (known as the Idols of Hip Hop). Tribal Echo’s members have vowed that their songs will make you laugh and cry, as well as provide some food for thought. Catch a glimpse of them on SABC2’s Jam Sandwich, on 20 February at 22:00, or visit www.tribalecho.co.za

To set the mood popular MC’s (in alphabetical order) Chase Lutron (ft. Project Break Free), Dokter Kapnoudis, HemelBesem, Lee-Ursus aka Liriese Kapsaal, Mr. Rex, Rashid Kamalie, SiepSokkie, Unseen Ones and DJ’s J-Efx en DJ Scorn will be entertaining guests from 18:00 until 20:00.

Rappers can also show off their skills at the open mic competition, which will be held from 17:00 until 18:00. Participants can enter at the start of the open mic session.Place is limited. Various prizes are up for grabs.

Tickets, at R50 for adults and R20 for children (under six years enter for free), are available at the gate, and are pre-sold at the Taalmonument. Tickets are limited. Products such as T-shirts and CD’s will be for sale. Bring along a blanket, warm clothes and a torch. Safe parking is available and access is controlled. No dogs or fires are allowed. The concert will be postponed if the weather is bad.

Visitors are welcome to bring their picnic basket or they can order a basket (R170 for two persons) from Volksmond Coffee Shop (tel. 021 863 2800). Coffee, light refreshments, wine and beer will be for sale.
