About the establishment
Tugela River Lodge is a rustic bush camp on a working cattle and game farm, on the banks of the Tugela River. The historic Spionkop Mountain is the backdrop to the thatch bungalows, each with their own deck overlooking the river. We are ideal for a quiet getaway for two, or an activity packed escape for the whole family (including the pooches!). Off the national grid we have solar powered lights, gas stoves and hot water is made in a donkey boiler. History tours, mountain biking, trail running, canoeing, tubing, fishing, bird watching and game viewing are all highlights - all right from the lodge.
We are about half way between Durban and Johannesburg, and conveniently only 15 minutes from the N3.
Tugela River Lodge offers guests exclusive use of 3 accomodation options. Minimum rates apply at each unit.
The smallest unit is the Hideaway, a 6 sleeper.
The Lodge is the biggest unit, it sleeps 18, in 4 stand-alone cottages.
The Bushcamp, 16 km downstream of the Lodge and Hideaway, is an 8 sleeper. It is an ideal secluded retreat at the end of a 4 x 4 track, at the base of Vaalkraans mountain.
Despite many activities on offer on site, we are within an hours drive from the Central and Northern Drakensburg. Here hiking, fishing, golf, canopy tours, resturants, Drakensburg Boys Choir performances, shopping and other activities are on offer. We are also only 10 minutes from the Spionkop Game Reserve, where you can enjoy game viewing from a vehicle or from horseback - both offering an opportunity to spot White Rhino and other plains game species.
The Lodge overlooks the Tugela River, which is a safe and ideal for swimming, tubing, canoeing and fishing. The use of our fishing rods, tubes, canoes and life jackets is free of charge.
