The “Afrikaans op ‘n drafstap” Night Race, held in collaboration with the Afrikaanse Taalraad (ATR) and Paarl Athletics Club, takes place at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl on Wednesday 12 December 2012. Last year’s inaugural race drew about 400 participants. The race is held in aid of Andrew Murray Child and Youth Care Centre in Wellington.

“This time we focus on the Afrikaans word. Participants in the 10 km race will not only run or walk with numbers, but each will also receive a word. Those participating in the 5km fun run will receive a word instead of a number - they may even choose their own word if they sponsor that word, at R100, in the “Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal” (WAT),” says Ria Olivier, representative of the ATR. 

The 10km race, held in accordance with the rules of Athletics South Africa and Athletics Boland, follows an exciting and challenging route. Last year 300 athletes finished the route. The 10 km race starts at 18:30. The entry fee is R40, with temporary numbers available at R25. Walkers are welcome to enter.

The 5 km fun run starts at 18:40. The entry fee is R15 (R5 for children under 18).

“The 5 km fun run is suitable for the entire family.  Moms and dads, grannies, uncles, aunts, sons, daughters, anyone may enter -  fit AND unfit. Prams are welcome.”

Entrance will be free for supporters, who are invited to a picnic with live Afrikaans music from 17:00 until 20:30 (when the prize-giving starts), in the Kuierkom at Volksmond Coffee Shop. Own picnic baskets are welcome and refreshments will be on sale.

Medals and cash prizes will be up for grabs and there will be lucky draws. Athletes can enter online at www.entrytime.com / www.sa-active.co.za  (deadline for online entries is 06.12.12). Entries at the Taalmonument on the day of the race will be possible from 17:00 until 18:15.
