Famous for its award-winning wines and its spectacular views, Durbanville Hills Winery stands proud in the Durbanville wine area a mere 20 minutes from Cape Town's city centre. From its vantage point high up on the vineyard-clad Tygerberg it overlooks Table Bay and Robben Island with Table Mountain providing a majestic backdrop.
Located within one of the Cape's cooler winegrowing regions, this is an ideal spot to cultivate a range of varietals with great success and to produce a range of wines that perfectly capture the area's varied character and rich fruitfulness. Our Merlots regularly wins international and national prizes and the 2000 Caapmans Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot from the single-vineyard range received the runner-up gold medal award in the international 2006 Calyon Trophy Bordeaux Blend competition. Also not surprising is the fact that our Sauvignon Blanc wines are among the top-selling Sauvignon Blancs in South Africa.
The winery is also a fervent protector of natural habitat and is part of a local effort to conserve the indigenous flora renosterveld, a type of fynbos. Renosterveld, found mainly on the lowlands along the south-western coastal region, forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest but richest of the world's six floral kingdoms and the only one confined to one country. Today less than 4% of it remains.
History
Durbanville Hills was established in 1997 when seven wine farmers and Distell, South Africa's foremost producer of wine and spirits, joined hands to promote the regional individuality of this prime wine-growing area, the second oldest in South Africa. Most of the farms here date back to the beginning of the 18th century.
Today nine producer-shareholders grow grapes for the winery, each with a personal stake in the success of Durbanville Hills which is one of Distell's international drive brands.
Since its maiden vintage in 1999 the winery has grown into one of the biggest super-premium brands in the country. Although the local market is still Durbanville Hills' primary focus, it is also building an international reputation. The winery is the only brand from the Southern Hemisphere distributed by the Brown-Forman Corporation in the major UK and US markets and the only brand in their portfolio they do not own.
Cool terroir
Situated in one of the Cape's coolest wine-producing regions, in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the vineyards providing grapes to the cellar all add their own distinctive characteristics, contributing to the complexity of taste, texture and weight of every wine in the Durbanville Hills range.
Here terroir determines all viticultural and cellar activities. Based on the conviction that all wines are shaped in the vineyard, slopes, soil composition, hours of sunlight, all play a crucial role in determining what should grow where. The undulating slopes that gave rise to the name Durbanville Hills provide ample variety as to aspect, microclimate and soil type, allowing for the production of wines with subtly differing personalities, be it the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage or Merlot.
The wines
Our wines are ranged in three tiers with the limited-release single-vineyard range forming the apex of the pyramid followed by the Rhinofields range, with the Hills range of accessible wines representing its solid base. All three ranges result from the same wine-making philosophy and scrupulous attention to detail. The difference lies in the style and target market.
Our wines have won numerous national and international awards for its three-tiered white and red wines including 4 and 4
