MeerKAT will also provide great opportunities for exciting pulsar science.
The SKA commissioning scientist Sarah Buchner who is completing a her PhD in astrophysics will share the exciting possibilities about the study of "Pulsars with MeerKAT" on Saturday, 11 October at S.A. Astronomical Observatory at 20h00. Stargazing and tours of the site will follow after the talk.
Summary of the talk
Massive stars end their lives in supernova explosions. For some stars the core collapses into a neutron star. Studying these amazing objects is one of the key science goals of the MeerKAT telescope. Pulsars, rotating neutron stars, are exquisite cosmic clocks. By timing them we can test Einstein’s theory of General Relativity and hopefully one day soon detect gravitational waves. Sarah will put particular emphasis on some of her favourite pulsars and outline the exciting pulsar science to be done by MeerKAT.
