A Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) astronomer, Dr. Éric Depagne will shed light on the baffling question "How to know almost everything about just anything, without ever getting close" on Saturday May 24 at 20h00.
On Saturday May 24 at 20h00, SA Astronomical Observatory will host a free lecture presented by Dr. Éric Depagne titled "How to know almost everything about just anything, without ever getting close" - stargazing and tour will fallow after the talk.
Summary of the talk
Spectroscopy is one of the two major ways for astrophysicists to understand the nature of the objects they study. Since there is no easy way to present visually stunning spectra, it is less popular among the general public. But without spectroscopy, astronomers would almost be blind, and a vast part of their job would simply not been done. The talk will briefly touch on the history of spectroscopy, and then detail what astronomers are really doing when they do spectroscopy.
