Judy Woodborne was awarded her Masters of Fine Arts Degree with distinction from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT in 1993. She has travelled and visited many printmaking workshops in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Austria and has exhibited extensively both locally and internationally. She recently returned from exhibiting the ‘Alternative Histories’ series in Salzburg, Austria.
Witty and audacious, Judy Woodborne’s art practice is post-modern. Referencing a rich historical resource of diverse culture symbols as her platform, she entertains the viewer with possibilities and interpretations that can be read into every man/woman’s life. She is a keen observer of humanity, an appreciator of the absurd. The Alternative Histories exhibition features a series of imagery from the Life of Everyman suite and the Tree of Life etching that have been deconstructed, reworked, layered and woven with other source material to create unique works that are not part of an addition as such. Inspired by an interest in science and the nature of matter, as well as the creation mythologies of ancient cultures, Judy explores the concept of duality and balance using western and eastern philosophies and mythological tales. Expanding on the concept of matter, Judy symbolically depicts the elements using philosophical and mathematical references to explore the connection between the physical and spiritual; between two states of being.
