INTERVIEWS In 'conversazione' with Simon Anholt
He created the terms nation, region and city brands and gave them usefulness. He's been a policy advisor to over 40 governments around the world. CapeInfo caught up with him at the Brand Africa Forum in Johannesburg. The conference looked at the position of Brand Africa, critical for South Africa since most people around the world think South Africa must be similar to South America. Two of the speakers both listed Brand Africa's main attribute as poverty. But Dr Dambisa Moyo, author of Dead Aid, went on to say that there are more poor people in the eight states of India (with a population the same as Africa's) than in the 26 countries of sub-Saharan Africa. But Simon says, "Reputation is everything; reality means nothing." Click here to read the thought-provoking interview. It is one of the most enjoyable and interesting we've ever done.
FORUM: THE BIG DEBATE What's our purpose? One of the first questions Simon Anholt asks leaders is "What is your country's purpose on the planet?" You can't have visions and goals if you don't have a sense of purpose. So we're challenging you - what do you think SA's purpose is or should be? What should your province and city/town's purpose be? We've given our thoughts so click here to read them and add yours.

For 84%, it had been their first visit. But 94% said it had exceeded their expectations and 97% said they will recommend that family and friends visit SA. Although, for many, it was a trip of a lifetime, 86% plan to return. Contrary to global perceptions, 88% felt safe while in South Africa. Read more on CapeInfo's home page - capeinfo.com
BLOGS: A SPANIARD IN THE WORKS Tourism representatives must be accountable After 16 months on the job, Western Cape MEC Alan Winde has very little to show that he's earning his keep as far as tourism is concerned. His proposal for restructuring tourism in the province was shot down by CapeInfo's readers, who gave him a 5.8% approval rating. That's a big FAIL! Click here to read more.
BLOGS: A SPANIARD IN THE WORKS Zuma's Hot Air/Line We called the Presidential Hotline a month ago to complain about chaos and anarchy on Limpopo's roads. There is no patrolling for moving violations and crossing on double barrier lines is the norm. Little wonder that head-on collisions claim so many lives. We were told to call back if we didn't receive a response in three weeks. We did call back. Click here to read more.

THE LAST WORD Web developer wanted The past several months have been a tribulation - with new systems for newsletters, classified ads, forum, WordPress 3 integration into our CMS and a content delivery network using Amazon Web Services' servers around the globe with CapeInfo's server in London, UK. (The last two are applications from corePHP, a remarkable small company in the USA that develops great products with excellent service.) Our directory system is the truly excellent sobi2, given longer legs and capability by Greg Hunt's awesome MET application.
But we've been trying to upgrade our Events Calendar for the past four months. We have a firm quote from overseas but would prefer to work with someone in South Africa, developing a relationship for on-going work. Our reviews system also need modification. It needs to be someone with rock-solid capability in joomla, PHP, MySQL, jQuery, mootools, AJAX and social media. Interested?
