Rudolph Tshie’s upcoming solo exhibition, My perspective reflections, is inspired by the spirit of place and culture of togetherness. Rudolph has become known as a painter of traditional landscapes depicting groups of farm workers in the fields. This stems directly from the personal experience of his home life. Born in 1969 in Soshanguve, an area inhabited by Sotho, Shangaan, Nguni and Venda people; it is natural for this artist to be influenced by the diversity and unity of his community. His work often reflects African culture and current social issues.
Rudolph obtained a certificate in Fine Art from the Federated Union of Black Arts, Johannesburg in 1993 and joined the Soshanguve Arts and Culture Forum in 1990. His work was included in the Collectors Guide to Art and Artists in South Africa, a visual journey into thoughts, emotions and minds of 558 artists in 2000. Rudolph has conducted several workshops in Soshanguve, Bloemfontein, America and Tshwane, conscious of the importance of developing the talent of young emerging artists.
In addition to his solo exhibition at the AVA in 2007, the Pretoria Art Museum held a retrospective exhibition of 87 works by Rudolph Tshie in 2010. He has participated in several group exhibitions, including an exhibition with INDASA (1999), a workshop and exhibition at Greatmore Studios (2007), an international exhibition at the DBSA offices (2007) and the Spier Contemporary competition and exhibition (2010), for which he received the public audience award. His work has been included in collections at the National Museum and Art Gallery in Gaborone, Botswana, the Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg, Transnet and MOMO gallery in Rosebank, as well as private collections in Germany, New York, Philadelphia and England.
