The Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl celebrates Freedom Day on 27 April with free entrance to all visitors. “We would like to invite the community to come and commemorate twenty years of freedom with us on Freedom Day,” says Jack Louw, Director of the the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument.
“The theme of the national 20 Years of Freedom celebrations is ‘South Africa: a better place to live – we have a good story to tell’. On Freedom Day visitors are thus invited to come and share their own stories of 20 Years of Freedom in a gigantic story book at the Taalmonument. They can also discover the story of the origins of Afrikaans through a guided tour of the monument and our exhibition. We have two play parks for the little ones and a walking trail of 1.2km that’s suitable for both fit and unfit.”
Drakenstein Transformation will give a talk (in Afrikaans) from 14:00 tot 15:00 about practical things that even kids can do to make South Africa a better place. Afrikaans word artists will perform from 15:00 to 16:00. If the weather plays along, activities will take place in the Garden Theatre on the lawn at the foot of the monument, where visitors can picnic. Alternatively it will be presented in the Conference Room in the Visitor Centre.
Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets or they can order a picnic basket (at R210 for 2 persons) from Volksmond Coffee Shop (tel. 021 863 2800).
