Multiple supermassive black hole systems are thought to have a significant impact on the way galaxies evolve, particularly through their impact on stars and gas as they spiral in towards one another..
Join us this Saturday, 23 August at 20h00 for an evening astronomy talk titled "The hunt for closely orbiting supermassive black holes" presented by Dr. Roger Deane, a postdoctoral research fellow at UCT and also affiliated with SKA.
Summary of the talk
When these black holes get very close to one another they are expected to emit gravitational waves, which are ripples in the fabric of space-time predicted by Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. Dr. Deane will provide an overview of these exotic systems and how this exciting science will be driven forward by the future African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Network, MeerKAT and the SKA.
