Derek Jacobs and Peter Meikle will bring together two views of the Cape with their exhibition at The Cape Gallery in September 2013. Peter’s detailed, realistic views of towns and cities create the perfect contrast to Derek’s colourful, expansive impressions of vast landscapes.
Peter Meikle was born in 1980 in South Africa, and grew up in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. A self-taught artist, his early work consisted mainly of pastel and pencil drawings on a wide variety of subjects from portraits to land and sea-scapes, always in a highly detailed, realistic style. Since 2008 Peter has been working predominantly on landscapes, both natural and with man-made intervention, in oil. One of Peter's mentors was internationally renowned artist Larry Norton.
Derek Jacobs was born in Johannesburg in 1946. His frequent travels through the Americas, Madagascar, East Africa, Zanzibar, Chagos, Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka were beautifully captured in pen and ink and further propelled him on his artistic journey.
Derek is enchanted by light effects in nature and a passion for the environment. He regularly cycles around the South Peninsula for inspiration, which he has found in observing light dancing through the clouds across the landscape.
Peter Meikle will be exhibiting a series of oil paintings and pencil drawings inspired by local views of Kalk Bay and Simon's Town, while Derek will exhibit a range of oil paintings and pastel drawings, more personally motivated by views from his studio. The exhibition will open in conjunction with First Thursdays.
