The Universe is increasingly expanding, using light astronomers can prove this.
S.A. Astronomical Observatory invites you to a free public lecture titled "Using light to prove that the Universe expands at an ever increasing rate". The talk will be presented by Eli Kasai, on Saturday, July 25 at 20h00.
Summary:
Eli Kasai will begin his talk by defining what light is in technical terms and how we use it to measure distances using a physical law in physics called “inverse square law”. Then proceed to discuss the concept of standard candles, which are a class of astrophysical objects with known intrinsic brightnesses and how we use them to precisely determine distances to objects in the Universe. This will then be followed by a discussion of how light from objects known as supernovae (exploding stars) was first used more than a decade ago to prove that the Universe has been expanding at an ever increasing rate and how we use this same light to calculate how much mass and energy the Universe contains.
