Having Flocking Good Fun in Stanford
All birds will be flocking to Stanford this October – and not only the feathered ones! The first week in October Stanford will be host to the largest Bird Fair in the Western Cape, and the weekend 4 – 6 October is when the fun-filled Stanford Flocktober Festival will knock you (and not only the birdwatchers) over with more than just a feather!
Stanford FLocktober Festival is a family affair, filled with activities such as boat trips down the river, ghost walks in historical Stanford, a mountain bike fun ride, walks (and tastings) on wine farms, birding talks and outings and, of course,… the Saturday marquee on the village green with music from 10:00 to late, local arts & crafts, local wine, beer and cider, and the opportunity to become a locavore.
Did we see frowns and question marks about the word locavore? The Stanford Food Heroes will provide the answer… and you will come back again and again to experience scrumptious food made by locals, from local produce. Being a locavore is just so much more than being slow food supporter! It is all about being 110% green in addition to the slow food movement – it is keeping the carbon footprint as low as possible by reducing the distance from farm to plate. However, the positive gains extend beyond the transportation issue. Eating and shopping boosts the local economy by encouraging entrepreneurs, providing more jobs, and eliminating the need for excess packaging. It also builds a relationship with local producers and promotes a better community spirit and environment.
The restaurants in and around Stanford will be following the same trend during the weekend, and their menus will all have a bird theme.
Saturday’s programme on the village green will include a dedicated Kidz area with face-painting, horse and cart rides and a possible petting farm, while grown-ups will be spoilt for choice between the many activities in and around town. The music line-up includes Jazz in the Tent with Andrew Herriot; Down Memory Lane with Gerry Fourie, Moonshine Blues with the local Blue Moon band, and rocking with Stavro (the front man of Cape Town's liveliest band). The evening will belong to the local and well-loved Hermanus-based band, Mississippi Disco.
On Sunday morning the town will awake to the deep cello sound of not birds… but Harley Davidsons, BMWs and other of those sleek two-wheel machines that will flock to Stanford for a Sunday Bikers breakfast.
So don’t just come for the day – come for the weekend and enjoy a real taste of village life.
